How we calculated your estimate
Repairs are priced differently from replacements. Every job carries a minimum call-out — the crew still has to arrive, set up, and dispose of debris whether the damage is 50 sq ft or 500. On top of that, we apply your state's labor rate multiplied by a severity factor, plus the materials for the affected area. That's why a small repair can look expensive per square foot: the fixed costs don't shrink.

Severity
Missing shingles are cheap. An active leak means flashing and underlayment. Rot means decking, and decking means the price jumps.
Access & pitch
Steep or high roofs need harnesses and staging. That's labor, and it's charged whether the repair is small or large.
Matching material
Old shingles fade. A patch on a 15-year-old roof will not match, and discontinued products may force a larger section replacement.
Labor rates
Repairs are labor-heavy — often 70% of the bill, versus 40–60% on a replacement.

Apply the 30% rule honestly
If the repair costs more than 30% of a full replacement — and your roof is past two-thirds of its life — you are spending good money to delay the inevitable. Run both numbers before you decide.
Tarp now, repair properly later
Emergency call-outs during a storm carry a premium. A $40 tarp buys you a week and a normal-rate repair.
Bundle small repairs
Three separate call-outs cost three minimum charges. If you know of several problems, get them all done in one visit.
Check whether it is a warranty claim
If the roof is under 10 years old, the failure may be covered — either by the material warranty or the installer's workmanship warranty. Check before you pay anyone.

Repairing a roof that should be replaced
Patching a 22-year-old asphalt roof is throwing money at a problem that returns next winter. Compare the repair against a replacement before you commit.
Ignoring the cause of the leak
Water travels. The stain on your ceiling is often nowhere near the actual entry point — usually flashing, not shingles. A patch in the wrong place fixes nothing.
Accepting a "free inspection" at face value
Most contractors inspect free because they want to sell you a roof. If the diagnosis is expensive, pay for an independent inspection before you accept it.
Letting a small leak wait
Water that reaches the decking turns a $400 repair into a $4,000 one. Rot is the single most expensive thing that happens slowly.
